Feature Story Layout Critique: "The Elegant Fray of Lucas Ossendrijver" - Flaunt Magazine

The elements of design incorporated into this feature are:
1. Space - The pages make good use of negative (white) space, which serves as a border to separate pictures from text.
2. Size - The pictures are much bigger than the text, showing the importance of showcasing the photos. The text serves as a compliment to the photos.
The principles of design used in this feature:
1. Contrast - In all of the pages but no. 5, one of the photos is always smaller than the other. This demonstrates contrasting sizes.
2. Balance - The page is balanced asymmetrically, making the layout more interesting.
3. Rhythm - As you flip through the pages, you begin to notice a rhythm. All the pages are repeated in basically the same pattern. This creates a sense of continuity.
4. Unity - The continuity established by the pattern outlined above unifies all the pages.
Advertisement Layout Critique: CMYK Advertisement - "World's Largest Showcase of New Creative Talent"
Elements of design:
1. Space - Although the image is crowded, the negative space still separates them so that none are touching.
2. Line - A vast array of lines are used in this image. Each drawing has a different line style.
3. Size - Many different sizes are incorporated into this design. Each image has its own unique size.
4. Textures - Like line and size, textures proliferate. All these create visual interest.
Principles of design:
1. Contrast - This image is all about contrasting lines, sizes, and textures.
2. Movement - The was some of the images are drawn creates the sense that they are moving.
3. Perspective - A few of these also demonstrate perspective
4. Unity - The theme of 50 (fifty) unifies the design.

I really like the cover of the CMYK. I think all of the creative ways to write "50" in black and white and then the colorful waved "50" stands out so much more because of the colors and larger font. It looks really neat.
I agree with you on the magazine feature, the layout is definitely simple, clean, and easy to follow.
The cover of CMYK is a nice contrast to their usual cover work. I like the pop of neon color against the black and white. (versus the usual black and white inbetween large amounts of neon color)
