I chose this photo from an article about plants blooming in winter in New York from the New York Times. It has a great deal of contrast, principle no. 2, in terms of color with the bright yellow flower against the dark leafy background. It also has a clear focal point (principle no. 1) with the flowers; the eye is undoubtedly drawn there first.

My sports photo was taken from an article about Dwight Howard's future with the NBA from Sports Illustrated. This image makes great use of principle no. 4, movement. The book says that the goal of movement is to evoke an emotion, and the pose in this photo evokes excitement and suspense. There is also atmospheric perspective (principle no. 6) in terms of the colors upfront in the photo ahving more value than the ones in the background.
